What the research actually shows
In SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM, 2022), average weight loss reached roughly 15% to 21% of body weight across doses over 72 weeks. The SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial (2025) reported greater average weight loss on tirzepatide than on semaglutide.

Side effects, stated plainly
Gastrointestinal effects dominate the trial data — nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting — typically during dose escalation. The label carries the same boxed warning class as other incretin drugs regarding thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents. Discuss the full profile with a clinician.
