Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors rather than one — GIP as well as GLP-1. In head-to-head research against semaglutide, that dual action has been associated with greater average weight loss.
What it's approved for#
Chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition; also approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
Forms and doses: Once-weekly injection, available as single-dose vials and as the KwikPen, in doses from 2.5 mg to 15 mg.
What the research actually shows#
In SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM, 2022), average weight loss reached roughly 15% to 21% of body weight across doses over 72 weeks. The SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial (2025) reported greater average weight loss on tirzepatide than on semaglutide.

Side effects, stated plainly#
Gastrointestinal effects dominate the trial data — nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting — typically during dose escalation. The label carries the same boxed warning class as other incretin drugs regarding thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents. Discuss the full profile with a clinician.
