The billing tricks in prescription skincare
We expected to find services lying about their monthly price. Mostly they are not. The advertised number is usually arithmetically correct — and almost nobody bills you monthly.
The pattern, in four moves
- Advertise per month, bill per shipment. Musely bills two months at a time; Nurx sells a quarterly tube described as "$30/mo". Both are arithmetically fine and neither is a monthly charge.
- Put the consult outside the subscription. Nurx adds a $40 medical consult and a $3/month support fee. Musely adds $20 per doctor visit, nonrefundable, charged again for new treatments.
- Ship on a cadence that isn't a month. Dermatica ships every 56 days against a monthly-looking price — see the caveat below, because we could not resolve what that actually costs.
- Lead with an intro price. Hims frames tretinoin as "$10/mo" against a reported ~$39.95 typical recurring rate. Curology's first month is free, which is a genuine offer and still not the ongoing price.

The comparison nobody in this market makes for you
Every service above is selling a prescription for a molecule that also exists as a cheap generic. If you already have a prescription, generic tretinoin runs from ~$38.68 with coupon ($27.59 w/ membership); ~$120 retail. What the subscription buys is the prescriber, the formulation, and the not having to think about it — which is a real service. It is just worth knowing that is what you are paying for, rather than the cream.

- "How often will my card be charged, and how much each time?" Not "what does it cost per month."
- "Is the consult fee inside or outside the subscription, and does it recur?" Musely's recurs on new treatments.
- "How many days of product is one shipment?" 30, 56 and 90 all get described as monthly in this market.
- "What is the price after the intro period, and when exactly does it start?"
- "What is the cancellation window relative to the next shipment?" The gap between billing and shipping is where surprise charges live.
