Guilt Free Peanut Butter

I don’t know about you but doing most of my dieting in the fat free era of the 80's I still tend to be a bit wary of things heavy in fat. As a result I even gave up peanut butter because it was literally one of those foods I could literally eat right out of the jar. But at long last I have found a great tasting peanut butter that is literally almost all protein with very little fat. (Contrary to common thinking peanut butter is mostly a healthy fat not a particularly high protein source.) Anyway the peanut butter I now enjoy is called PB2. Two tablespoons has 52.2 calories, 3.4 carbs, and 5.65 grams of protein.

And yes, it really does taste good! And, because you literally just add water to the pure dried peanut mix you can make up as little or as much of what you want. Incidentally, it also comes with a chocolate version. That I won't tempt myself with!

It Happened This Week: Fall Foliage, Eating Well On The Road, Arsenic in Rice, Omega-3s, and FFTW

Okemo MountainAs I’m looking out my window at the red and yellow leaves I realize how lucky I am to be at a healthy weight loss spa like Green Mountain at Fox Run in October.  Two years ago Cindy wrote a post about Vermont in October and why it is such a wonderful time to visit a weight loss retreat in beautiful New England.  All the seasons are nice but the fall foliage here is some of the most beautiful in the world.

If you’re headed out for a trip, you might wonder how you can stay healthy while traveling. Jessica gives us her best recommendations eating well on the road.  She recommends bringing snacks, making wise food court choices, and staying hydrated.  A registered dietitian, Jessica focuses on blending nutritious with delicious in her healthy eating advice.

Think brown rice is healthy?  Well, it is. But tried nutrition advice to eat a wide variety of foods  is proving true once more.  Seems that a lot of rice contains higher-than-desired amounts of arsenic (if any amount is desired, that is).   Meaning it’s wise to mix up your grains.  This is especially true for the gluten-free among us who may be eating much more rice than the rest of us.  Thanks to Linda at Kitchen Therapy for that heads-up.

Omega-3 fatty acids are in the news again.  A study from the US National Eye Institute shows that increased intakes of this important fat can decrease the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.  To get enough omega-3s, the American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish at least twice a week (more for people with heart disease) and oils and foods rich in alpha-linolenic acid (flaxseed, canola and soybean oils; flaxseed and walnuts).  If you’re concerned about mercury in fish, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has downloadable seafood guides to choosing fish that’s healthy for you and the environment.

Fat Free Talk Week is coming soon – October 19-23, 2009.  This 2nd annual nationwide event is all abut body activism — supporting the pursuit of a healthy ideal which looks different for each one of us.  It’s intended to raise awareness of body image issues and how “fat talk” can damage self-esteem and create endless cycles of unproductive behavior.  Check out ways to get involved and sign the promise to to eliminate fat talk from conversations with friends, family and yourself.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

60-Minutes a Day for Kids

60-minutes a day for kids Being from New England I'm a big fan of the New England Patriots and watching them play football (American) every Sunday. Well, last Sunday when I was watching the game I noticed an ad by the NFL for their new website NFLrush.com.

It turns out that they are promoting exercise for kids. I thought this was a great way to use their influence to get kids to be more active. The NFL's theme is "Play 60" which encourages kids to go outside and run around and play for one hour a day.

Personally, I feel the only way we’re going to be able to break this cycle we're in of rising obesity rates is to really get the point across to kids about how important proper exercise and nutrition is. Children listen to their role models, so I hope every one of us who has some type of influence can lead by example and teach healthy lifestyle values to the next generation.

What to Do About Your Sweaty Workout Clothes

Posted on 03. Oct, 2009 by admin.

What to do about your sweaty workout clothes The owner of the company I’m about to tell you about wasn’t a scientist or engineer, but just a regular guy who had a problem…

Mark Konjevod found that even when he washed his gym clothes they still seemed to have that not so fresh scent to them. So he asked around and quickly realized he wasn’t the only one with this problem. This issue of what to do about smelly workout gear eventually led to him developing the first laundry detergent specifically designed to thoroughly clean dri-fit material and other gym clothing.

For everyone who comments on the blog and emails me asking about the latest innovations and gadets on the market you may want to check out his Win Detergent if you’ve ever been in Mark’s shoes!

Wishy-Washy and…We’re Back!

Wow, the site was down for I don’t even know how long. Too much! Somehow we got hacked and our database was corrupted. But Fat Man Unleashed was able to survive! Thanks to my trusty back-ups and through some hard work/countless hours I managed to get us back on track. Sounds like my weight loss journey. Ha.

Seriously though, we were down for several days and I was locked out for a long time. Things should be back to normal now. I’m just glad the site is back up, people were probably beginning to think I abandoned them being all wishy-washy. You know, like I am…

This is an article from FatManUnleashed.com’s Healthy Weight Loss and Fitness Blog.

Overweight Women at Risk for Cancer

Overweight women at risk for cancer

"It is possible that obesity may become the biggest attributable cause of cancer in women within the next decade,"

lead researcher Andrew Renehan, of Cardiff University in Britain

After reading an article that studied more than 124,000 people last year who developed cancer I saw the direct connection between being overweight and being at risk. That figure is up 70,000 from 2002 and the trend seems to be pointing at an increasing number of women developing cancer.

The study used a BMI (body mass index) rating of 25-30 to classify people as overweight and 30+ to signify obesity. If you fall into that category, I highly suggest you do everything in your power to lower your weight through safe and natural practices so that you decrease your potential health risks.

Brussels Sprouts at the Farmers Market

Posted on 18. Sep, 2009 by admin.

Brussels sproutsThe picture on the right is Brussels sprouts on the stalk. I remember the first time I saw it and had no idea what it was because I was so used to seeing Brussels sprouts in a small container wrapped with plastic in the supermarket, which I'm sure is the way many other people know of them.

If you have the chance to get to a farmers market see if you can find fresh on the stalk Brussels sprouts. By doing this you are supporting local farms and are getting connected to the story behind your food. Amazingly this connection can make food taste better and can encourage children to eat their vegetables.

Preparing Brussels sprouts is easy. Just cut off the bottoms and cut them in half. Steam over boiling salted water for about 10 minutes then saute in olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Another easy recipe is Carrots and Brussels Sprouts. This is a low calorie, high fiber dish that can be a great side dish for any dish. It can also be combined with whole wheat pasta, brown rice, or quinoa to make a delicious vegetarian dish. A nutritional analysis of this recipes is available.
